What to do this Week in DC: August 12-15th, 2013

Mark your calendars, it’s going to be a great week.

Monday, August 12, 2013:

Screen on the Green DC 2013: If you haven’t enjoyed the free outdoor movie events this summer, the time is now. For the last showing of the season, the Screen on the Green film festival presents the 1982 classic, Tootsie starring Dustin Hoffman. You can watch the #2 film on A.F.I’s “Funniest Films of All Time” list on a giant 20’ by 40’ screen between 7th and 12th Streets on the National Mall.

Here’s a quick run-down on the movie:

After countless rejections, a “difficult,” New York-based actor resorts to extreme measures to get work. Auditioning for women’s roles in a wig and heels, he/she finds soap opera success in a dress. Dustin Hoffman is a knockout (not in a pretty way) in the title role. He gets super support from Jessica Lange (an Oscar), Teri Garr (an Oscar nomination), Bill Murray and the director, Sydney Pollack, who plays a cynical agent. (1982) 116 Min.

The movie begins at dusk (approximately 8:30pm), but the party starts hours before! This is a fun, relaxing way to kick off the week. Screen on the Green is rain or shine and will only be shut down if there is lightening.

With all the talk of “mixologists” these days, the organization is focusing on spirits this week. Join them as they sample hand-crafted genever cocktails (Lucas Bols gin) from two of DC’s finest “bar-chefs.” The drinks will range all the way from “fresh and light to downright dangerous.” Chef Damian Steward will also prepare food to pair with the cocktails.
